How to Properly Perform a Pellet Grill Burn-Off

Before using a new pellet grill for the first time, you must complete an initial burn-off. This essential step, often called a burn-in, ensures that any residual lubricants or oils used during the manufacturing and shipping process are completely eliminated. This process sanitizes the cooking chamber and prepares your equipment for safe, clean cooking.

Step 1: Component Preparation
Begin by removing all adhesive labels and protective packaging from the exterior and interior of the unit. Take out all removable internal components, including the cooking grates, warming racks, and the heat diffuser plate.

Wash these parts thoroughly using warm water and a mild dish soap to remove any surface dust or debris. Rinse each piece completely and dry them with a clean cloth before reassembling the grill. Ensuring these parts are dry prevents moisture from interfering with the initial ignition.

Step 2: Power and Fuel Setup
Once the grill is reassembled, fill the hopper with high-quality hardwood pellets. Connect the unit to a power source and initiate the startup sequence according to your specific model's instructions.

Set the controller to its maximum temperature setting. It is important to use the highest possible heat to ensure that any manufacturing residues are thoroughly carbonized and cleared from the internal surfaces of the grill body.

Step 3: The Burn-Off Process
Once the grill reaches its peak temperature, close the lid. Allow the unit to run at this high heat for a minimum of 30 minutes. You may notice a slight odor or a small amount of smoke during this time; this is a normal part of the oils being cleared away.

After 30 minutes, the internal environment is sanitized and ready for use. You can either transition directly into your first cook or follow the manufacturer’s recommended shutdown procedure to cool the unit down for later use.
